Study Notes

Anterior Lung Auscultation Points

  • Begin at the apex of the lung, located above the clavicle.
  • Assess the right and left upper lobes in the 2nd intercostal space.
  • Evaluate the right middle lobe and the left upper lobe at the 4th intercostal space.
  • For the right and left lower lobes, move to the midaxillary line at the 6th intercostal space.

Posterior Lung Auscultation Points

  • Start just above the scapulae to listen to the apices of the lungs.
  • Locate C7 (vertebral prominence) and proceed to T3 to assess right and left upper lobes.
  • Assess right and left lower lobes from T3 down to T10.
  • Ensure to move the stethoscope around for thorough evaluation and compare both sides.

Bronchial Normal Breath Sounds

  • Auscultated over the anterior chest, especially the tracheal area.
  • Characteristics include:
    • High-pitched and loud sounds.
    • Inspiration is slightly shorter in duration compared to expiration.

Bronchovesicular Sounds

  • Found both anteriorly (1st and 2nd intercostal spaces near the sternum) and posteriorly (between the scapulae).
  • Medium pitch sounds with the following features:
    • Duration of inspiration and expiration are equal.

Vesicular Sounds

  • Auscultated over peripheral lung fields both anteriorly and posteriorly.
  • Characteristics include:
    • Soft sounds with a low pitch.
    • Inspiration is slightly greater in duration than expiration.
