Louis Riel: A Canadian Métis Leader
- Born October 23, 1844, St. Boniface, Assiniboia (western Canada). Died November 16, 1885, Regina, District of Assiniboia, Northwest Territories.
- A prominent leader of the Métis in western Canada. Spokesman for Métis insurgents in the Red River Resistance.
- Led efforts to halt Canadian surveyors and prevent William McDougall's entry into Red River. Seized Fort Garry.
- Formed a provisional government to negotiate terms of union with Canada. This provisional government was approved on June 24th and the Manitoba Act came into effect on July 15th.
- Received public thanks for urging followers to repel a Fenian attack in 1871.
- Elected to the Dominion Parliament in 1873, but did not take his seat. Expelled from Parliament the following year but re-elected a short time later.
- Reported a holy vision in 1875 guiding him as a prophet for the Métis.
- Experienced concerns from followers which led to his commitment to a Quebec mental hospital in 1876.
- Returned in 1884 to negotiate land claims and grievances of Métis in the North-West Territories.
- Established a provisional government in March 1885.
