Flashcards

Long Haul Train Definition

A train composed of two or more standard train formations; the constituent trains can be empty or loaded.

Purpose of Long Haul Trains

To reduce congestion in busy railway sections and increase throughput, and improve rolling stock speed.

Train Identification

Long haul trains have specific names (e.g., Maruti, Python) which are shown in FOIS and control charts and use assigned colors.

TXR Requirement

Long haul trains must be formed at notified stations with a Train eXchange Regulator (TXR) present. If not present, a TXR must be arranged.

Long Haul Train Operation

  • Long haul trains are defined as train formations with more than one standard train.
  • They may be empty or loaded.
  • Running long haul trains reduces congestion, increases throughput and speeds of rolling stock.
  • Trains run on specific named sections (e.g., Maruti, Python) and have a unique color code in FOIS and on control charts.
  • The trains are formed at designated stations and TXR (Train eXchange Route) presence is required unless otherwise arranged.
  • Train may be split at any station with safety precautions during exceptional or passenger train precedence.

Long Haul Train Composition

  • Long haul trains can be BOXN/BCN/container or steel rakes.
  • They use single or twin pipe air brake systems.
  • Maximum speed of a long haul train is limited to the lower speed of the constituent trains.
  • Special T/G boards are used for identified sections.

Long Haul Train Requirements

  • Long haul trains use special signaling methods when curves, lengths or visibility block physical signal exchange and Walkie-Talkie communication can be used. If Walkie-Talkie fails, the train must stop.
  • loco pilots will be nominated from a certain category and must have adequate experience
  • loco pilot of middle loco will follow instructions of leading loco pilo.
  • Prescribed whistles are used for communication between loco pilots and guards.

Locomotive Requirements

  • Locomotives used must be single or multiple unit (MU) based on haulage capacity.
  • For loaded and loaded/empty combinations, leading MU locomotives need at least five operating compressors.
  • Middle locomotives in a long haul train are not permitted to charge the brake pipe.
  • Rail Brake / Dynamic Brake (RB/DB) of leading locomotives must be in working condition.

Locomotive Crew Details

  • Long haul trains begin at the originating station by exchange of physical signals and whistles by guard and loco pilot.
  • Loco pilots must be selected from a specified category having suitable experience.
  • Before starting after a brake application, pressure must be restored in the engine and brake van confirmed by guards and loco pilots.
  • 5 minute release time and careful use of regenerative braking is required.

Carriage and Wagon (C&W)

  • Two rakes with separate valid BPCs are clubbed.
  • Air pressure continuity test is conducted before operation.
  • Minimum BP pressure in engine should be 5 kg/cm² and in the rear brake van 4.7 kg/cm².
  • 8-wheeler brake van (if available) is marshalled between the two empty rakes.
  • Train detachments can occur due to hot axles or flat tires.

Communication

  • Pre-tested VHF sets with spare batteries are crucial.
  • Crews must ensure walkie-talkies are operational.
  • Trained communication during operation is key.
  • divisions must use suitable walkie-talkies for crew.

Operating (Traffic)

  • Long haul trains should run on single line clear.
  • Air pressure should be created by the leading locomotive.
  • Max speed 60 kmph for loaded and stock or loco speed allowance for empty trains, with adherence to other speed restrictions.
  • Loco pilots and guards need coordination before and during operation.
