The Union Parliament
- Comprises the President and two Houses: Lok Sabha (House of the People) and Rajya Sabha (Council of States).
Lok Sabha
- Members are directly elected by Indian citizens with a term duration of five years.
- Can be dissolved by the President on the Prime Minister's advice or extended during a national emergency for one year at a time.
- A new Lok Sabha must be elected within six months post-emergency.
Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli
- Merged into a single Union Territory named Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu effective January 26, 2020.
- Located near Gujarat, the merger aims for better administration and to eliminate redundancy given their proximity (35 km apart).
Composition of Lok Sabha
- Maximum strength: 552 members; 550 elected and 2 nominated members from the Anglo-Indian community (this nomination provision expired on January 25, 2020).
- Breakdown: up to 530 from States, up to 20 from Union Territories.
Qualifications for Lok Sabha Membership
- Must be an Indian citizen and at least 25 years old.
- Must be registered as a voter.
- Cannot hold any office of profit under the Government.
Disqualifications for Lok Sabha Membership
- Holding a government position outside Parliament results in disqualification.
- Bankruptcy, acquiring allegiance to another country, or being guilty of law violations are also disqualifying factors.
- Members risking disqualification by voting knowingly may face penalties.
Speaker of the Lok Sabha
- Presiding officer responsible for conducting House business, ranking higher than Cabinet Ministers except the Prime Minister.
- Responsibilities include laying motions, addressing House business, and managing issues like communal or war challenges.
Role and Functions of the Speaker
- Business Management: Conducts meetings and ensures all remarks are addressed to them.
- Election Process: Elected from among Lok Sabha members for a five-year term; remains until a new Speaker is elected.
- Deputy Speaker Role: Assumes duties in absence of the Speaker; elected or removed in the same manner.
- Administrative Duties: Announces House business, regulates order, and sets time limits for discussions.
- Disciplinary Actions: Can warn, reprimand, or suspend members for disorder; handles breaches of privilege and anti-defection matters.
- Judicial Independence: The Speaker is answerable only to the House, and their rulings cannot be contested in court.
