Plot
- The sequence of events in a story
- Includes exposition, inciting incident, development, climax, and resolution
- Exposition: introduces setting and characters

- Resolution: point at which the conflict is ended or resolved
Setting
- The background against which the incidents of the story take place
- Includes place, time, weather conditions, social conditions, and mood or atmosphere

Character
- A person in a fictional story
- Can be protagonist (clear center of story) or antagonist (opposition or "enemy" of main character)

Theme
- The total meaning of the story

Conflict

- Can be internal (takes place inside a person's mind) or external (takes place when a person or group struggles against another person or group or against a non-human force)
Special Plot Techniques

- Foreshadowing: a hint or clue about an event that will occur later in the story
- Flashback: a section of the story that is interrupted to tell about an earlier event
- Surprise ending: an ending that catches the reader off guard with something unexpected
