Study Notes
Life Processes in Animals
- Animals have organ systems where multiple organs work together
- Digestive system digests food, absorbs nutrients into the bloodstream
- Gas exchange system (lungs) exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide
- Circulatory system (heart and blood vessels) transports materials
- Excretory system (kidneys) filters waste from the blood
- Nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves) coordinates body actions
- Endocrine system (glands) releases hormones (chemical messengers)
- Reproductive system produces sperm (males) and eggs (females) to allow embryonic development
Stem Cells
- Stem cells can divide repeatedly and differentiate into specialized cells
- Embryonic stem cells are found early in development and can become any cell type
- Adult stem cells are found in adult tissues and have limited differentiation potential (e.g., bone marrow cells)
- Stem cell therapy uses stem cells to treat or repair damaged tissues (e.g., bone marrow transplants to treat leukaemia)
- Embryonic stem cells are obtained from unused embryos for research
- There are ethical concerns about using embryonic stem cells in research.
