Life on Earth
- Earth was once a barren planet, without life.
- The first life appeared in water bodies, belonging to the plant kingdom.
- Plant life then evolved into animal life.
- The relationship between plants, animals, and humans with their environment is called an ecosystem.
- Humans are called Homo sapiens.
- The biosphere holds life on Earth, divided into plant and animal kingdoms.
- Living things depend on each other, and non-living things.
- Plants produce food using sunlight, air, and water; they are called food factories.
- Plants provide food for animals.
- Animals provide nutrients for plant growth.
- Humans are the most significant part of the biosphere using resources for their needs.
- Humans have altered the environment to meet their needs.
The Plant Kingdom
- Plants vary across different vegetation belts.
- Vegetation types include forests, grasslands, bushes, and shrubs.
- Vegetation varies because of climate differences.
- Equatorial regions have high temperatures and rainfall, with dense forests.
- Deserts have low rainfall and high temperatures, with fewer plants.
- Vegetation belts are grouped based on location and climate: Tropical Hardwood Forests, Grasslands, Deserts, and Temperate Softwood Forests.
Tropical Hardwood Forests
- Located between 23.5° North and 23.5° South latitude.
- Two types: Equatorial/Tropical Evergreen Forests and Tropical Deciduous Forests.
- Evergreen forests receive high rainfall throughout the year, and have tall trees.
- Deciduous forests receive moderate rainfall, and trees shed leaves in the dry season.
- Diverse tree species exist in each type.
Grasslands
- Dominated by grasses and scattered trees.
- Receive lower rainfall compared to forests.
- Divided into Tropical and Temperate Grasslands, based on their locations and temperature conditions.
- Tropical grasslands are characterized by tall grasses, and exist between tropical forests and deserts.
- Temperate grasslands have shorter grasses and exist in the interior areas of continents.
Deserts
- Areas with very little plant life due to low rainfall.
- Categorized into hot and cold deserts.
- Hot deserts experience high temperatures year-round.
- Cold deserts have freezing temperatures for much of the year.
Temperate Grasslands
- Located in the temperate zone.
- Receive 25-75 cm of rainfall.
- Have short, soft grasses.
- Known by different names based on their location (e.g., prairies, pampas, downs, veld).
Temperate Softwood Forests
- Exist in high altitude areas of continents.
- Known as Taiga or Coniferous forests.
- Mostly consist of cone-bearing trees, like pine, fir, spruce, and larch.
Animal Kingdom
- Animals also live in the biosphere.
- Animal types and populations vary according to climate and vegetation.
- Equatorial regions have varied animals (e.g., monkeys, elephants, crocodiles).
- Grassland animals (e.g., lions, cheetahs, deer).
- Polar regions have animals with thick fur (e.g., penguins, polar bears).
