Revelation of the Quran

  • The Quran was revealed between 610 and 632 A.D.
  • Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) started retreating to a cave in a nearby mountain, Hira, around the age of forty, where he would spend his time in worship and solitude.
  • His favorite time of retreat was during the month of Ramazan.

The Process of Revelation

  • When a revelation came, the Holy Prophet experienced strange sensations.
  • The Quran was revealed in portions, but did not remain in one condition until the last revelation.

Compilation of the Quran

  • The Prophet would recite the revelations to his companions, who would write them down on various materials such as stones, wood, branches, and pieces of leather.
  • The chapters of the Quran were not compiled in the order they were revealed, but rather by their length and importance.
  • According to Hazrat Umar, the very pain of the Quran was written down and given to the Holy Prophet.
