- Animals need to eat, grow, be safe, and produce young ones as part of their life cycle.
- All animals reproduce young of the same kind.
Classification of Animals by Reproduction
- Mammals: no egg-laying
- Birds: some egg-laying
- Reptiles: no egg-laying
- Amphibians: quite likely to lay eggs
- Fish: some egg-laying (e.g. salmon and trout)
Characteristics of Vertebrates
- Cold-blooded vertebrates (fish, amphibians, and reptiles): body temperatures change with surroundings
- Warm-blooded vertebrates (birds and mammals): body temperatures remain almost constant, unaffected by surroundings
Insect Life Cycle
Life Cycle of the Cockroach
- Young ones (nymphs) resemble parents, but are smaller
- Cockroach nymphs go through a developmental stage before reaching adulthood
