Months of the Year
Overview
The calendar year is divided into twelve months, each with a distinct name and unique characteristics. The Gregorian calendar, widely used today, consists of twelve months, with each month having either thirty-one, thirty, or twenty-nine days, depending on whether the year is a leap year or not.
The Twelve Months in Order
The months of the year, in order, are:

January
January is the first month of the year and is named after the Roman god Janus, who had two faces, allowing him to see both the past and the future. It typically has 31 days.
February
February is the second month of the year and is named after an ancient Roman festival of purification called Februa. It usually has 28 days, but in a leap year, it has 29 days.
March
March is the third month of the year and is named after the Roman god of war, Mars. It has 31 days.
April
April is the fourth month of the year and takes its name from the Latin word 'aperire,' meaning 'to open'. It also has 30 days.
May
May is the fifth month of the year and is named after the Greek goddess Maia. It has 31 days.
June
June is the sixth month of the year and is named after the Roman goddess Juno, the god of marriage and childbirth, and the wife of Jupiter, king of the gods. It has 30 days.
July and August
July and August are the seventh and eighth months of the year, respectively. July was named after Julius Caesar, and August after Rome's first emperor, Augustus. Both months have 31 days.
September through December
September through December are the ninth through twelfth months of the year. These months were originally named after Roman numbers 7 through 10, but their names were later changed to the current names we use today. Each of these months has 30 days, except for February, which has 28 or 29 days in a leap year.
Leap Years
A leap year occurs every four years, and it has 366 days instead of the usual 365. February in a leap year has 29 days instead of the usual 28.
How to Remember the Days of a Month
There is a popular rhyme to help remember the number of days in each month:
- Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November;
- All the rest have thirty-one,
- Excepting February alone,
- And that has twenty-eight days clear,
- And twenty-nine in each leap year.
