Vehicle Operation Procedures
- Employees driving assigned vehicles must conform to all state or local laws regulating traffic and parking, unless required to do otherwise in the line of duty.
- Employees are not allowed to operate or park assigned vehicles in a way that causes unfavorable comments or reflects discredit upon BSO.
- Only authorized employees are permitted to operate BSO vehicles.
Vehicle Response Modes
- Code 1 - Routine Response: Normal operation within state traffic laws and regulations guidelines.
- Code 3 - Emergency Response:
- Vehicles will make full and continuous use of all available audio and visual warning devices during emergency operation.
- Vehicles may exceed maximum speed limits, but only if they do not endanger life or property.
- Vehicles may proceed past red lights or stop signs, but only after ensuring a safe passage through the intersection.
- It is at the deputy's discretion to respond in Code 3 mode, but they must have a reasonable belief that the situation is dangerous or life-threatening.
Off Duty Radio Communication
- Deputies driving assigned vehicles off duty must monitor the BSO radio channel used for the area where they are operating.
- Deputies not assigned a permanent radio designator will use their CCN as identification if off duty.
Off Duty Law Enforcement Action
- Off duty deputies are responsible for properly handling or referring all incidents coming to their attention.
- They will request a zone unit to respond and render aid until ample on-duty employees arrive to handle the situation.
- Off duty deputies may be required to handle a call under the direction of a supervisor, and will be paid overtime for doing so.

Vehicle Operation Without Headlights
- BSO law enforcement vehicles are authorized to operate without headlights when needed for law enforcement functions, as per Florida Statutes.
