Job Description

  • Manages personnel and activities of a law enforcement or detention unit
  • Supervises staff, including prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, and maintaining a healthy and safe working environment
  • Manages administrative operations, including planning, coordinating, and evaluating programs and services
  • Ensures compliance with Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, codes, and standards
  • Reviews and approves reports to ensure completeness and accuracy of information

Responsibilities by Unit

Warrants

  • Coordinates transportation and extradition of inmates throughout Florida and the United States
  • Assists investigators with suspect apprehensions
  • Serves warrants and/or other legal processes

Investigations

  • Provides briefings on the status of on-going investigations
  • Conducts, supervises, and/or reviews administrative and/or criminal investigations
  • Investigates and analyzes complaints
  • Maintains investigative funds and confidential informant files

Detention

  • Inspects facilities for maintenance needs and cleanliness
  • Assists in mass inmate movement and/or emergency situations within jail facilities
  • Coordinates transportation of inmates to applicable locations
  • Disseminates court information regarding inmates

Community Relations

  • Responds to citizen complaints
  • Gives public education talks
  • Supervises and administers the Explorers program
  • Works with neighborhood organizations on applicable issues and/or concerns

Centralized Services

  • Serves as a domestic violence liaison with the court
  • Supervises extra duty employment
  • Participates in disaster response efforts

Professional Standards

  • Oversees accreditation for the department

Forfeitures

  • Prepares forfeiture files for court review and action
  • Prepares and/or approves justifications for forfeiture
  • Writes, prepares, formulates, revises, and approves legal contracts for forfeiture, formal lawsuit affidavits, and complaints

Forensic Services

  • Monitors maintenance of equipment to ensure proper servicing at specified intervals
  • Keeps abreast of latent print technologies
  • Conducts follow-ups on potential blood exposures
  • Draws composite sketches of suspects and/or witnesses being sought in connection with crimes

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and up to one year of specialized or technical training beyond high school
  • Police Academy graduate and three to five years of progressively responsible law enforcement or inmate detention service supervisory experience
  • CJSTC and FDLE certificate
