Utilization of the Canine Unit
- The Canine Unit can be requested for situations involving: • Suspects who have fled on foot from officers or the scene of a crime for Class B and above offenses • Window peeping suspects • Residence and building searches with forced entry or when information exists that a suspect may be inside • Article searches when evidence may be located • High-risk traffic stops • Locating missing, lost, or injured persons with exigent circumstances
- The Canine Unit shall not be utilized in situations where: • A suspect cannot be identified or linked to a crime • For crowd control • During questioning or interrogation of a suspect • To transport prisoners • For routine patrol calls or arrests
On-Scene Procedures
- Officers at the scene of an incident where a Canine Team may be needed should: • Set an immediate search perimeter • Notify a supervisor and request approval to utilize the Canine Unit • Request Communications to contact the available or on-call Canine Team • Stay at the location where the suspect was last seen until the Canine Team arrives
- All officers on the perimeter should: • Stay in or next to their vehicle with all emergency lights activated • Not enter the perimeter or building at any time during a canine call unless directed to do so by a Canine Officer
Use of Other Agency Canine Units
- Outside agency Canine Units shall not be called or allowed to be utilized on an APD initiated call without authorization from the APD Canine Unit supervisor
- This does not restrict an outside agency from using its own Canine Unit on any call that the agency initiates which then enters APD jurisdiction
