Study Notes
Laryngeal Anatomy: Key Structures
-
Aditus Laryngis
- Entry point to the larynx
- Bordered by the epiglottis anteriorly, aryepiglottic folds laterally, and arytenoid cartilages posteriorly
-
Pyriform Sinus
- Deep depression located posterolateral to the aditus laryngis
- Formed by the space between the superior cornua of the thyroid cartilage and arytenoid cartilages
-
Vallecula
- Small furrows at the base of the tongue
- Positioned immediately anterior to the epiglottis, between median and lateral glossoepiglottic folds
-
Vestibule
- Wide area within the larynx cavity
- Located superior to the ventricular folds (false vocal folds) and inferior to the aditus laryngis
-
Ventricle
- Space between the ventricular folds and vocal folds (true vocal folds)
- Runs horizontally along the length of both sets of folds
-
Glottis
- The variable-sized opening formed between the vocal folds
- Located at the superior edge of the vocal folds
-
Subglottic Space
- Region immediately below the vocal folds
- Encompasses the inner cricoid cartilage and the uppermost part of the trachea
