Language Study: Grammar and Vocabulary

Section I: Language Study

• Question 1 part A (A1) involves directing as instructed in any four out of five questions and is worth 4 marks.
• The first question in Q1 (A1) involves punctuating a given sentence.
• The second question in Q1 (A1) requires picking out an infinitive from a sentence.
• The third question in Q1 (A1) involves creating a new blending word.
  • This is done after combining two words.
  • Examples are breakfast + lunch = brunch or smoke + fog = smog
• The fourth question in Q1 (A1) involves filling in the blank with the correct form of the verb.
• The fifth question in Q1 (A1) requires writing the root word after removing the prefix or suffix.
• Question number A2 in Q1 involves doing as directed in any two questions and the total marks is 4.
• The first question in A2 requires converting a sentence into indirect narration.
• The second question in A2 requires creating a word register of four words related to the word 'Universe'.
• The third question in A2 involves changing the voice of a sentence.
• Question B in Q1 has 2 marks.
• Question B in Q1 involves following the directions in any one of the two questions.
• The first question in B ask you to use the words afraid and admire in a meaningful sentence.
• The second question in B ask you to turn a simple sentence into a complex one

Section II: Textual passages

• Question 2 part A involves reading a passage and doing the activities and is worth 10 marks.
• Question A1 in Q2 involves stating whether information is 'True or False'.
• Question A2 in Q2 requires completing a web with information extracted from the comprehension text.
• Question A3 in Q2 involves completing fill in the blanks questions using phrases within brackets.
• Question A4 in Q2 involves doing as directed like adding a tag question.
• Question A5 in Q2 is a personal response question
• Part B of question 2 is very similar and contains a comprehension after which students will be ask to extract meaning to create sentences in exercise B1.

Section III: Poetry

• Question 3A tests comprehension after which students respond accordingly in exercise A1.
• Exercise A2 involves identifying impacts of beautiful things.
• Exercise A3 ask the student to describe the rhyme scheme.
• While exercise B ask the students to provide an appreciation of the poem with the given points.

Section IV: Non-Textual Passage

• Section focuses on testing vocabulary and grammar skills through a non-textual passage
• Question 4A involves matching columns A with B correctly.
• Exercise A2 requires answering questions with just a word or two
• Exercise A3 involves engaging with connectors.
• Exercise A4 involves doing as directed, and will require students to rewrite sentences and rephrase using the requested verbiage.
• Exercise A5 is the personal response question.
• Exercise B involves summary writing

Section V: Writing Skills

• Focuses on testing writing skills in formal and informal settings
• Question 5A focusses on letter writing.
• Expects students to choose one of the two available questions (A1 or A2).
• Question 6A focuses on information transfer.
• Task is to convert verbal information into a non-verbal format or vice versa.

Section VI: Creative Writing

• Main focus is creative writing, expression, and thinking outside the box.
• Expects students to complete either questions A1 or A2.
• Question 7A focusses on expanding upon themes or writing news reports
• Part B focuses on developing stories or narrating experiences.
