Study Notes
Language Research
- Language research is a field of research that deals with how people use language, what words and phrases they choose and combine, and how it is acquired and changes over time.
- It involves a complex process that requires consideration of many factors, such as language use, type of users, acquisition process, setting, research methodology, and related disciplines.
Parameters of Language Research
- Four parameters of language research:
- Approaches
- Objectives
- Research Design
- Data Collection and Analysis
Approaches
- Refers to how one views the language research to be conducted
- Divided into general and specific approaches
- General Approach: considers language as a whole to get a clearer picture of what to study
- Specific Approach: considers one small part of the language where one whole problem is discussed
Objectives
- Concerned with the purpose of the research
- May be hypothesis-generating (aims to discover a certain language phenomenon and postulate a theory about it)
- May be hypothesis-testing (tests an already existing theory, proving or disproving it later)
Research Design
- Establishes the method used in the study, such as scope, variables, sampling, etc.
Data Collection and Analysis
- Data may be taken from observed behaviors, such as language performance, written or oral
- Information may be given by subjects of the study, such as attitude, beliefs, perceptions, records of language proficiency from tests, class ratings, etc.
- Data is analyzed through the use of statistical treatments and other tools
Initial Stages of Language Research
- Steps in the preparatory stages of language research:
- Selecting and Focusing a Research Problem
- Choosing the Proper Research Methodology
- Reviewing Related Literature and Studies
Selecting and Focusing a Research Problem
- Sources of a Research Problem:
- Researcher’s experience and interest
- Other language research
- Research on allied disciplines
- Focusing a Research Problem: narrowing down the topic to a specific one and focusing on it
- Formulating the General and Specific Questions: translating the research topic into questions that will constitute the research’s SOP
Choosing the Proper Research Methodology
- Decisions on the appropriate method of research depend on the research approach and objectives used in the study
- Types of research methodologies:
- Quantitative Research Method
- Qualitative Research Method
- Mixed Research Method
Reviewing Related Literature and Studies
- Reasons for the review:
- To broaden the researcher’s idea or perspective of the research problem
- To help the researcher focus the problem into workable research questions
- Sources of related literature and studies:
- Libraries
- Online resources
- Professional Organizations and Embassies
