What is Population?
- Population refers to the group of people that live in one place.
- Quantifying the people in a population requires using a census and a municipal register.
Classification of Population
- Population can be classified by age and sex.
- Youth are considered to be those younger than 16.
- Adults are between 17 and 64.
- Seniors are 65+.
- Sexes consist of male and female.
- The population of newborns has more males than females, but in the senior population, there are more women than men because women live longer.
Population and Work.
- An active population consists of adults who are working or looking for a job.
- An employed population consists of people who perform a job and get paid in return
- An unemployed population are people who are searching for work.
- An inactive population are those who work without receiving money; i.e. students, those who care for family, retirees and disabled who cannot work

- Population in a place can increase or decrease for 2 reasons which are births and mortality
- Birth rate is the number of people born in a place in a determined time frame.
- A higher birth rate means the population grows.
- Mortality is the number of people who die in a place in a determined timeframe.
- A higher mortality rate means the population decreases.
- Population changes when people change the residences
- Emigration and immigration are part of this change
- Emigration - people leaving a place to live elsewhere.
- These people are called emigrants
- It decreases a population.

- Spain has a population of 46.94 million.
- Has very unevenly distributed, there are zones with a lot of population, others are sparse
- Elevated aging of the population - there is low birth rate and higher amount of senior citizens
- Has elevated immigration - people coming from Africa, Asia, and Hispanic America settle here.
- Majority lives in cities, making for an urban population.
