Erik Erikson's Stages of Psychosocial Development
- Trust vs. Mistrust (0-12 months): Child develops a feeling of trust in caregivers
- Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt (12-18 months): Child learns what they can and cannot control, developing a sense of free will
- Initiative vs. Guilt (3-6 years): Child learns to become independent by exploring, manipulating, and taking action
- Industry vs. Inferiority (6-12 years): Child learns to do things well or correctly, according to standards set by others (especially in school)
Adolescence and Adulthood
- Identity vs. Role Confusion (12-18 years): Adolescent develops a well-defined and positive sense of self in relationship to others
- Intimacy vs. Isolation (19-40 years): Person develops the ability to give and receive love and to make long-term commitments
