- In 1921, Gandhi became the leader of the Indian National Congress and led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding womens rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and achieving self-rule.
- Gandhi adopted the traditional Indian dress of a dhoti and began living a self-sufficient lifestyle as a way of identifying with the Indian rural poor.
- He undertook several hunger strikes to stop religious violence in India.
- The last of these, begun in January 1948, also had the indirect goal of pressuring India to pay out some cash assets owed to Pakistan.
- Gandhi died on January 30, 1948.
