Keyboarding Definitions
- Keyboarding: Inputting information using a computer keyboard, placing fingers on designated keys.
- Typing/Keying/Typewriting: Similar to keyboarding but producing printed output, not computer storage.
Finger Placement
- Home keys: ASDF JKL; (outlined keys)
- Thumbs: Resting or near keys, especially the spacebar.
- Home columns: Vertical groups of keys with each finger responsible for a corresponding column (sloping left).
- Index fingers: Additional column near their home columns.
- Pinky fingers: Control keys and columns to the left (left shift, etc.).
The Home Rows
- Fingers positioned on home row keys at rest.
- Hand fingers and thumb position on 4 keys for each hand at rest.
- Left hand pinky on "A", ring on "S", middle on "D", index on "F".
- Right hand index on "J", middle on "K", ring on "L," pinky on ";".
- Thumbs hover near or on the spacebar.
Learning New Key Reaches
- Find the new key on both the illustration and physical keyboard.
- Study the illustration of the key reach.
- Observe and practice finger movements to the new key.
- Keep other fingers in home position.
- Straighten fingers for upward reaches and curve for downward reaches.
- Practice reaching and pressing the new key.
Keyboarding Rules for Spacing
- Period (.) : 1 space after (abbreviation), 2 spaces after (sentence end).
- Comma (,): 1 space after.
- Semicolon (;): 1 space after.
- Colon (:): 2 spaces after.
- Hyphen (-): No space.
- Question mark (?): 2 spaces after.
- Exclamation mark (!): 2 spaces after.
Calculating Gross Words per Minute (GWAM) and Net Words per Minute (NWAM)
- GWAM: Total words ÷ total time in minutes.
- NWAM: GWAM minus errors.
