What is a Cholesterol Test?
- A cholesterol test is a blood test that measures the amount of cholesterol in the blood.
- It determines the risk of heart attacks and other forms of heart disease and blood vessel diseases.
Types of Cholesterol
- Total Cholesterol: the sum of cholesterol content in the blood.
- Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol: "bad" cholesterol, too much of which can cause buildup of fatty deposits in arteries, leading to heart attacks and strokes.
- High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Cholesterol: "good" cholesterol, which helps remove LDL cholesterol from arteries, keeping them open and blood flowing freely.
- Triglycerides: a type of fat in the blood, stored in fat cells when calories are not needed.
Causes of High Cholesterol

- Being overweight
- Physical inactivity
- Diabetes
