Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in the coastal town of Porbandar, Gujarat, to a Hindu family.

He trained as a lawyer and began his career in India, but was unable to achieve success.

In 1893, he moved to South Africa to represent an Indian merchant in a lawsuit.

In 1915, aged 45, Gandhi returned to India and soon began leading campaigns for social and political reform.

He became the leader of the Indian National Congress in 1921 and led nationwide campaigns for civil rights, ending untouchability, and achieving self-rule.

In 1947, Britain granted independence to India and the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two dominions, a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan.

Despite this, religious violence broke out in many parts of the country, and Gandhi undertook several hunger strikes to try to stop it.

The last of these, begun in January 1948, was also aimed at pressuring the Indian government to pay Pakistan's debts.

Mahatma Gandhi died on January 30, 1948, at the age of 78.
