  • Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in the coastal town of Porbandar, Gujarat, to a Hindu family.

  • He trained as a lawyer and began his career in India, but was unable to achieve success.

  • In 1893, he moved to South Africa to represent an Indian merchant in a lawsuit.

  • In 1915, aged 45, Gandhi returned to India and soon began leading campaigns for social and political reform.

  • He became the leader of the Indian National Congress in 1921 and led nationwide campaigns for civil rights, ending untouchability, and achieving self-rule.

  • In 1947, Britain granted independence to India and the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two dominions, a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan.

  • Despite this, religious violence broke out in many parts of the country, and Gandhi undertook several hunger strikes to try to stop it.

  • The last of these, begun in January 1948, was also aimed at pressuring the Indian government to pay Pakistan's debts.

  • Mahatma Gandhi died on January 30, 1948, at the age of 78.
