Normal Joint Motions
- Flexion (flex): bending a joint
- Extension: straightening a joint
- Abduction (abd): movement away from the midline
- Adduction (add): movement towards the midline
- External Rotation (ER): outward rotation (lateral rotation)
- Internal Rotation (IR): inward rotation (medial rotation)
Special Kinds of Flexion and Extension
- Hyperextension: movement beyond the anatomical position, often used in reference to the knee or elbow
Special Kinds of Abduction and Adduction
- Shoulder horizontal abduction/adduction: movement of the arm across the midline
- Wrist radial deviation (RD): movement of the wrist towards the thumb side
- Wrist ulnar deviation (UD): movement of the wrist towards the little finger side
- Foot inversion (INV): movement of the foot inwards
- Foot eversion (EV): movement of the foot outwards
- Cervical Lateral Flexion (LF or SB): sidebending of the neck
- Trunk Lateral Flexion (LF or SB): sidebending of the trunk
Special Kinds of Rotation
- Forearm or forefoot supination (sup): rotating the forearm or foot upwards
- Forearm or forefoot pronation (pro): rotating the forearm or foot downwards
- Thumb opposition: thumb movement towards the other fingers
- Thumb reposition: returning the thumb to its original position
- Trunk rotation (R ROT and L ROT): rotation of the trunk
Other Motions
- Scapular or pelvic elevation/depression: raising or lowering the scapula or pelvis
- Scapular protraction (abduction) and retraction (adduction): scapular movement forward or backward
- Circumduction: circular movement of a limb
- Shoulder scaption: movement of the arm in a position between flexion and abduction
- Anterior pelvic tilt: tilting of the pelvis forward
- Posterior pelvic tilt: tilting of the pelvis backward
- Lateral pelvic tilt: tilting of the pelvis to the side
