DOST
- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is the main managing agency responsible for science & technology in the Philippines.

Notable Filipino Scientists
- Fe Del Mundo: Known for her work in pediatrics.
- Dr. Eduardo Quisumbing: A pioneer in the study of Philippine medicinal plants, making tremendous contributions to the field of plant taxonomy.
- Gavino Trono: A tropical marine phycologist, recognized as the "Father of Kappaphycus farming". He is noted for his research on seaweed species.
- Maria Orosa: Well-known for her accomplishments in food technology.
Pre-Spanish Period
- Filipinos practiced farming, shipbuilding, mining, & weaving.

American & Post-Commonwealth Era
- 1901: The Philippine Commission established the Bureau of Government Laboratories, replacing the Laboratorio Municipal. This bureau focused on studies of tropical diseases and laboratory projects, serving as the primary research center until WWII.
- 1933: The National Research Council of the Philippines was established.
- 1946: The Institute of Science replaced the Bureau of Science (BOS).
- 1950: A report from the US Economic Survey indicated a lack of basic information necessary for the country's industries.
- Factors such as lack of support for experimental work, minimal budgets for scientific research, and low salaries for scientists prompted government action.
- 1958: The Science Act of 1958, which aimed to address these issues, led to the creation of the National Science Development Board.
Marcos Era
- Science was given importance beginning with the 1973 Constitution, Art. 15 Sec. 9, stated to improve "..advancement of science & technology".
- Many laws were enacted promoting science & technology during Martial Law.
- 1967: Science was deemed necessary for development programs, directing DepEd to revitalize science courses in public HS.
- 3rd SONA: Technology was recognized as a leading factor in economic development, and additional funds were channeled to support projects in applied sciences & science education. -4th SONA: A portion of the war damage fund was allocated to private universities to encourage the creation of courses in science & technology research
- 5th SONA: Upgrading science curricula & teaching equipment was deemed crucial to science.
- The Philippine Coconut Research Institute, Philippine Textile Research Institute, and Philippine Atomic Energy Commission were established. The latter used atomic energy for economical development.
- 7th SONA: Major development projects focused on reforming education sectors, establishing research & development schools, technical institutes, science education centers, and agricultural.
- National Grains Authority: Aimed to provide development for the rice & corn industry.
- Philippine Council for Agricultural Research: To support the progressive development of agriculture, forestry & fisheries.
- PD No. 49, s. 1972: Protection of intellectual property for the creator/publisher of the work
- Establishment of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA): To provide environmental protection & utilize scientific knowledge to ensure safety.
- Philippine National Oil Company: To promote industrial & economic development through the effective & efficient use of energy resources.
- National Academy of Science & Technology: To serve as a reservoir of scientific & technological expertise for the country.
- 1982: Reorganization of NSDB & its agencies into National Science & Technology Authority to provide central direction & coordination of scientific & technological research.
- 1986: Establishment of Philippine Science HS campuses in Visayas & Mindanao to encourage careers in science & technology.
Fifth Republic
Aquino Term
- 1986: DOST replaced NSDB, giving science & technology a representation in the cabinet
- Creation of a Pres. Task Force for Science & Technology which pushed to newly industrialized country status by 2000
- Former DOST Sec. Ceferin Follosco: The budget allocation for science & technology increased to 1.054B in 1989.
- Due to Asian financial crisis, the budget allocation was trimmed down to 920M & 854M (1990-1991).
- Encouragement for scientists & investors to bring the PHL to its former position as 2nd to JPN in the field of science & technology.
- RA 6655: Called Free Public Secondary Act of 1988, providing free education up to secondary level
- Included the "Science for the Masses Program" to promote ST literacy among Filipinos.
FVR Term
- Established several programs significant to the field of Science and Technology including the enactment of Laws:
- RA No. 8439: Magna Carta for ST Personnel.
- RA No. 7687: ST Scholarship Law of 1994.
- RA No. 7459: Inventors & Inventions
- RA No. 8239: Intellectual Property Code of the PHL, providing industrial property rights, copyrights & related rights, and governing technological transfer agreements
Estrada Term
- RA No. 8749: Philippine Clean Air Act, which aims to protect & preserve the environment and ensure sustainable development of natural resources.
- RA No. 8792: Electronic Commerce Act of 2000 (E-Commerce), which outlaws hacking and provides opportunities for new businesses emerging from the internet.
GMA Term
