Study Notes
Usability Theory and Evaluation
- Usability inspection is a generic name for a set of methods that aim to find usability problems in a design.
- It involves evaluators inspecting a user interface to identify issues.
- Heuristic evaluation is a usability evaluation method that compares a product to a list of design principles (heuristics) to identify where the product does not follow those principles.
10 Usability Heuristics
- Keep users informed about what is going on, through appropriate feedback within a reasonable amount of time.
- Speak the users' language, and avoid internal jargon.
- Prevent errors from happening, and provide a "clearly marked exit" for users to leave unwanted actions.
- Follow platform and industry conventions to avoid confusion.
Methods of Usability Inspection
- Cognitive walkthrough: evaluators work through a series of tasks and ask questions from the user's perspective.
- Heuristic evaluation: comparing a product to a list of design principles (heuristics) to identify where the product does not follow those principles.
User Testing
- Moderate the test, perform user testing, and observe what users do to identify difficulties with the user interface.
The Interface and Usability Process
- The interface refers to the point of interaction between a user and a system.
- The interface should be efficient, effective, learnable, and provide excellent usability and user engagement.
ISO 9241
- An international standard that provides a framework for understanding usability in the context of human-system interaction.
Pioneers of Usability Theory
- Donald Norman: known for his books on design, especially "The Design of Everyday Things".
- Jakob Nielsen: a usability consultant known for his work on user interface design and for coining the term "usability engineering".
- Alphonse Chapanis, Wendell Garner, and Paul Fitts: notable for their early work in human factors and ergonomics.
Types of Disabilities
- Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Written expression disorder
- Speech or Language Impairment
- Other Health Impairment (ADHD)
- Autism
- Intellectual Disabilities
- Emotional Disturbance
- Developmental Delay
- Multiple Disabilities
- Hearing Impairment
- Orthopedic Impairment
