Thanksgiving and the Native American History
- The story of Thanksgiving taught in schools is partly true and partly fictionalized, and omits the diverse languages, customs, and political systems of Native Americans.
- The English settlers' wheat did not grow well, and they relied on Native Americans to teach them how to survive and cultivate new foods.
The First Thanksgiving
- The Native Americans welcomed and helped Europeans adjust to life in North America, and the first Thanksgiving feast was shared between Captain Miles Standish, Squanto, Samoset, and Massasoit and their immediate families.
- The Wampanoag provided more food when the English settlers' food was not enough, and they feasted together for three days.
- The first Thanksgiving meal likely included deer, wild turkeys, fish, beans, squash, corn syrup, corn bread, and berries.
Native American Contributions
- Native Americans taught European settlers how to build new types of housing, distinguish poisonous plants, and use fish as fertilizer.
- They introduced new foods such as corn, beans, squash, and berries.
- Native Americans served in the U.S. military before being recognized as full U.S. citizens.
Eid ul-Adha, or the Feast of the Sacrifice
- Eid ul-Adha is a celebration of the willingness to sacrifice for others, and animals are sacrificed to share meat with the poor and needy.
- One of the five pillars of Islam is performing the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, which includes sacrificing animals to feed the poor.
- Muslims are instructed to be generous and give to those who have less, and to remember the poor and the trials of Abraham.
Muslim Celebrations of Thanksgiving
- Some Muslim organizations, such as CAIR, encourage volunteering at soup kitchens and giving food packages to needy families to celebrate Thanksgiving and the end of the Hajj.
- Muslims Against Hunger Project organizes special "Muslims Serve" days to recall the Prophet Abraham's sacrifice and offer thanks for God's blessings.
- Muslims are instructed to serve others, including orphans, the poor, and neighbors, without seeking favor or reward.
