Ischemic Stroke
- Ischemic stroke is a life-threatening medical condition that occurs when there's a lack of blood flow to a part of the brain, usually due to blood clots or other reasons.
Symptoms
- One-sided weakness or paralysis
- Aphasia (difficulty with or loss of speaking ability)
- Dysarthria (speech difficulties)
- Loss of consciousness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Neck stiffness
- Loss of muscle control on one side of face or facial droop
Causes
- Thrombosis
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Alcohol use
Management and Treatment
- Thrombolytic drugs (e.g. Actilyse 70mg TPA)
- Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy
- Blood sugar management (e.g. Insulin 10 U IV)
- Blood pressure management
- Sympathomimetic therapy (e.g. Norepinephrin 0.05 mcg)
- Oxygen therapy
- Referral to ICU
- Stroke rehabilitation (including speech therapy and physical therapy)
