Pronunciation for Regular Verbs

  • First rule: if the last sound of the simple form of the verb is a /t/ or /d/, "-ed" is pronounced /ɪd/ as a separate syllable
  • Second rule: if the last sound of the simple form of the verb is a /p/, /k/, /f/, /s/, /ss/, /x/, /sh/ or /ch/“-ed" is pronounced /t/, a separate syllable is not heard
  • Third rule: in all other cases, "-ed” is pronounced like a soft /d/
