Study Notes
Internet of Things (IoT)
- IoT is a network of interrelated devices that connect and exchange data with other IoT devices and the cloud.
- IoT devices typically include sensors and software, and can be mechanical and digital machines or consumer objects.
Home Network Diagram
- A basic home network diagram consists of a router with a built-in modem and access point from an ISP (Internet Service Provider).
- This setup allows connection of up to four devices using a network (UTP) cable.
- Advantage: suitable for small houses with limited devices, no need for additional network equipment.
Network Configuration
- Network configuration involves assigning network settings, policies, flows, and controls.
- In a virtual network, configuration changes are easier to make since physical devices are replaced by software.
- Configurable settings on a network switch and router include:
- IP address for identification
- Password for added security
- Channel and band selection for improved performance
- Default gateway for visibility to network management tools
- Neighbor discovery for added visibility
- Correct time for proper troubleshooting and detailed error logs
Wi-Fi and Routers
- Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) is a popular wireless technology providing high-speed Internet and network connections.
- A router connects local networks to other local networks or the Internet.
- A wireless access point connects devices to the network wirelessly using radio frequencies.
- Wireless routers are based on the IEEE 802.11ac Wave 2 standard.
- Wireless routers can receive information from and send information to the Internet.
Types of Routers
- Wired routers connect directly to modems or wide-area networks (WANs) via network cables.
- Wireless routers connect wirelessly to devices that support the same wireless standards.
- Wireless routers can receive information from and send information to the Internet.
Wireless Access Points
- A wireless access point (WAP) transmits and receives data over a wireless local area network (WLAN).
- An AP is like an Ethernet hub, but relays 802.11 frames to all other 802.11 or 802.3 stations in the same subnet.
- Wireless access points work to distribute a Wi-Fi signal by connecting directly to a router or network switch via Ethernet cable.
- Access points can improve wireless coverage by creating a wireless local area network.
