Study Notes

Invasion Games Overview

  • Invasion games are activities testing players' ability to move into opponent's space, occupy it and defend their own.
  • Teams invade opponent's territory, scoring points and preventing the opposing team from scoring within a time frame.

Sungka

  • A game played by two players.
  • Uses a solid carved wooden board with two rows of seven circular holes and two large holes (houses) at each end.
  • Forty-nine small stones, marbles, pebbles, seeds, or shells are used.
  • Stones are distributed in the holes, excluding the opponent's house.

Sungka Rules

  • Players simultaneously drop one stone into each hole clockwise, excluding the opponent's house.
  • If a player runs out of stones, they wait for their turn.
  • If stones land in an empty hole in their own row, they collect those stones and place them in their house.
  • The game ends when no stones are left on either side of the board; the player with the most stones wins.
  • Last stone placement: If the last stone is placed in the player's house they choose a hole to gather stones. If the last stone is placed in an empty hole, the player is "dead" and loses their turn.
  • The next player can select any hole to begin their turn.

Skills Developed in Sungka

  • Hand speed: Quickly moving stones into holes.
  • Eye-hand coordination: Correctly dropping stones into the intended holes.

Other Invasion Games

  • Chess: Played by two players on a 64-square board. The goal is to checkmate the opponent's king.
  • Game of the Generals (Salpakan): Players simulate armies to eliminate opponents' armies and capture the opponent's flag.
  • Dama (Checkers): Played on a board using 12 pits (pitsas) at the end of diagrams. The goal is to capture all the opponent's pieces.
  • Basketball: Teams score by shooting a ball into the opponent's basket.
  • Tumbang Preso: One player ("it") defends a tin can while others try to knock it over with their slippers.
  • Soccer: Teams of 11 players try to kick the ball into the opponent's goal.
  • Futsal: A variation of soccer, typically played indoors with a smaller, less bouncy ball.
  • Patintero: Players run through lines on the ground while others try to catch them.
  • Lawin at Sisiw: Two people act as a hawk and hen while others act as chickens trying to avoid being caught.
  • Agawan Base: Two teams try to take over the opponents' base by tagging players.
  • Agawang Sulok: One player ("it") stands in the center, and others try to exchange their positions within their respective bases.
