Flashcards
Skeletal Muscle
Skeletal Muscle
A type of muscle tissue attached to bones, responsible for movement. It's voluntary, meaning we consciously control its actions.
Smooth Muscle
Smooth Muscle
Muscle tissue found in internal organs like the stomach and blood vessels. It's involuntary, meaning it works automatically.
Cardiac Muscle
Cardiac Muscle
Muscle tissue found only in the heart. It's involuntary and responsible for heart contractions.

Study Notes
Introduction to the Muscular System
- There are over 600 skeletal muscles
- Skeletal muscles account for 40-50% of body weight
- Muscles, along with the skeleton, shape and define the body
Functions of Skeletal Muscles
- Movement of the body
- Maintaining posture
- Stabilizing joints
- Maintaining body position
- Generating heat
Defining Muscle
- Muscles are the only tissue in the body capable of contraction
- Contraction occurs in response to stimuli, which generates movement in different parts of the body
Types of Muscles
- 3 Types:
- Skeletal muscles
- Smooth muscles
- Cardiac muscles
Smooth Muscle
- Non-striated
- Spindle-shaped, single nucleus
- Involuntary
- Found in walls of blood vessels, internal organs (e.g., urinary bladder, gastro-intestinal tract)
- Controlled by autonomic nerves
Cardiac Muscle
- Rectangular shape
- Found only in the heart
- Involuntary (responds to electrical stimulation)
- Controlled by autonomic nerves
- Single nucleus
- Striated
Skeletal Muscle
- Consists of muscle fibres arranged into bundles
- Also known as striated and voluntary muscles
- Attached to bones
- Striated (banded appearance)
- Voluntary (controlled by conscious effort)
- Located in limbs, abdomen, head and neck
- Controlled by somatic nervous system
Parts of Skeletal Muscle
- Origin: The fixed (immovable) part of the muscle, usually attached to a bone
- Insertion: The movable part of the muscle, which may be attached to a bone, cartilage, skin or another muscle
- Fleshy (belly) part: The contractile part, the thicker, middle region of the muscle
- Tendon: The fibrous, non-contractile cord that attaches the muscle to a bone
- Aponeurosis: A flattened tendon that connects muscles to bone and acts as support (e.g., plantar aponeurosis in the foot)
Types of Skeletal Muscles
- Grouped according to arrangement of muscle fibers:
- Parallel fibers:
- Quadrilateral:
- Strap-like:
- Strap-like with intersections:
- Fusiform
- Oblique fibers:
- Pennate: (Unipennate, Bipennate, Multipennate, Circumpennate)
- Triangular:
- Circular:
- Convergent
- Parallel fibers:
Examples of Each Type
