Study Notes
Introduction to Psychology
- Psychology draws from Greek roots, "psyche" meaning "soul" or "mind", and "logos" meaning "word".
- Psychology was initially the study of the mind and soul.
- Around 1920, psychologists became dissatisfied with the idea of studying the mind. The mind can't be observed directly.
- Psychology is now defined as the systematic study of behavior and experience. It's a process, not a thing, like the flow of a river, not an automobile.
- Psychology is the scientific study of all mental processes, expressed in bodily behavior and observable experience.
Goals of Psychology
- Describing: Accurately describing behaviors, issues, and problems. Methods like case studies, surveys, and self-tests are used. Example question: "What happened?"
- Explaining: Understanding why people react in certain ways. Example question: "Why did they do that?" This involves understanding factors impacting personality and mental health.
- Predicting: Forecasting behaviors based on past patterns and understanding underlying causes. This allows psychologists to anticipate behaviors and improve the ability to change or control a behavior. Example question: "What would happen if they did this?"
- Changing/Controlling: Influencing or altering behavior to achieve positive outcomes. This aims to construct beneficial changes in people's lives. Example question: "What can they do next time to reach a different outcome?"
Fields of Psychology
- Clinical Psychology: Diagnoses and treats psychological disorders
- Social Psychology: Studies interactions with others, including prejudice, attraction, and attitudes.
- Developmental Psychology: Studies the process of development across a lifespan, focusing on physical, cognitive, and social changes.
- Forensic Psychology: Provides advice and consultation to legal professionals (police, lawyers, courts) addressing issues like mental competence or danger assessment.
- Counseling Psychology: Works with people experiencing life challenges and decisions. It focuses on anxiety, depression, and life decisions, unlike clinical psychology, which is more involved with psychological disorders.
- Cognitive Psychology: Studies mental processes like thought, knowledge, and problem solving. It examines decision-making, problem-solving, and language.
- Medical Psychology: Applies psychological theories and techniques to improve patients' psychological and physical well-being.
Why Study Psychology?
- Students study psychology for various reasons including the desire to help others and understand themselves better.
- A psychology course might be a general education requirement, a component in pre-medical or other programs, or to develop a passion for the field.
- Psychology is a popular major.
