Monomers
- A monomer is a small molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer.
Naming Polymers
- 'Poly' in Greek means "many".
- 'Mer' in Greek means "part".
- Homopolymers are named after the monomer they are made from. For example, a polymer made from the monomer vinyl chloride is called poly(vinyl chloride).
Copolymer Naming
-
Copolymers are polymers made from two or more different monomers. There are different types of copolymer:
- Alternating Copolymer: Monomers alternate in a regular pattern.
- Block Copolymer: Strings of one monomer are attached to strings of another monomer.
- Random Copolymer: Monomers are mixed randomly.
- Graft Copolymer: One type of polymer chain is attached to the side of another.
- Copolymers are named after the monomers they are made from. For instance, a copolymer made from styrene and butadiene might be called "styrene-butadiene copolymer" or "poly(styrene-co-butadiene)".
Source-Based Polymer Nomenclature
- Source-based nomenclature names polymers after the natural source they are derived from, like "natural rubber" or "cellulose". This naming convention is primarily used for homopolymers.
"Poly(vinyl chloride)" (PVC)
- "Poly(vinyl chloride)" is an example of source-based nomenclature. It is a homopolymer made from the monomer vinyl chloride.
