Course Structure

• Focus on the fundamentals of physical therapy practice.
• Students responsible for understanding policies in TCC Catalog and PTA Program Student Handbook.

Examination Policies

• Make-up exams must be taken on the first day of return after absence.
• Penalty of 5 percentage points per day for untimely make-up exams.
• Exams require specific protocols for both paper and online formats.

Specific Exam Protocols

• Paper Exams:
  • Random seating; Scantron required.
  • Personal items must be stored at the front.
• Online Exams:
  • Must use specific software (Respondus lockdown browser).
  • Presence of faculty required during exam administration.

Assignment and Attendance Policies

• Assignments due at the beginning of class.
• Lab preparation and appropriate attire required; unprepared students receive an unexcused absence.
• Attendance should be communicated in case of tardiness.

Honor Code

• Students must adhere to PTA Honor Code as outlined in the program handbook.

Withdrawal and Grading Policies

• Withdrawal without penalty up to 60% completion results in a ‘W’; after this, results in an ‘F’ grade unless documented circumstances allow otherwise.

Course Units and Objectives

• Ethics and Regulations:

  • Understand FOTO outcome summaries; study Virginia Rules and Regulations.

• Body Mechanics and Vital Signs:

  • Demonstrate proper body mechanics and posture.
  • Identify cardiovascular system components and normal vital sign values.

• Assistive Devices and Transfers:

  • Measure patients for wheelchairs, educate on their use, and identify precautions for patients with special needs.

• Gait Training and Assessments:

  • Describe normal gait cycles, assess functional mobility, and document assessments using SOAP notes.
  • Conduct environmental assessments to enhance safety and independence.
