Study Notes

Introduction to Medical Entomology

  • Medical Entomology is a specialization of Entomology that deals with insects that are medically important.
  • Size does not matter, as mosquitoes have killed more people than any other living thing in the world.

Negative Interactions with Arthropods

  • Delusional Parasitosis (DP) and Entomophobia
  • Envenomation
  • Bites and Piercing
  • Myiasis
  • Allergic reactions
  • Urticaria (Hives)

Modes of Transmission

  • Direct contact: Arthropods are directly transmitted from man to man through close physical contact.
  • Mechanical transmission: The disease agent is mechanically carried by the arthropod.
  • Biological transmission:
    • Propagative: The disease agent multiplies in number in the body of the arthropod without undergoing developmental change.
    • Cyclo-propagative: The disease agent undergoes both developmental change and multiplies in number.
    • Cyclo-developmental: The disease agent undergoes only developmental change (no multiplication).
  • Transovarian transmission: The disease agent is passed onto the next generation through the eggs of the insect.
  • Transstadial transmission: The disease agent is passed from one stage of life cycle to another and then transmits the disease to man.

Taxonomical Classification of Arthropods

  • Arthropods:
    • Insecta (6 legs, exoskeleton, 3 body parts, mostly terrestrial and some aerial)
    • Arachnida (8 legs, exoskeleton, 2 body parts, mostly terrestrial)
    • Crustacea (10 legs, exoskeleton, 2 body parts, mostly aquatic)
    • Myriapoda (lots of legs, exoskeleton, lots of segments, mostly terrestrial)
  • Class: Insecta
    • Order: Diptera (flies), Order: Coleoptera (beetles), Order: Siphonaptera (fleas), Order: Hemiptera (true bugs), Order: Phthiraptera (lice)
    • Examples of medically important insects: mosquitoes, sandflies, tabanidae (horse fly), glossinidae (tsetse fly), muscidae (house fly), sarchophagidae (flesh fly)
  • Class: Arachnida
    • Examples: Aranea (spider), Palamnaeus (scorpion)
  • Class: Crustacea
    • Examples: ticks, mites (scabies mites, leptotrombidium sp., dermatophagoides sp., demodex folliculorum)
  • Order Acarina
    • Examples: ticks, mites
