Introduction to Management
- Management is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling human and other resources to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively.
- An organization is a collection of people who work together and coordinate their actions to achieve a wide variety of goals.
- Efficiency is doing things right, focusing on getting the most output for the least input.
- Effectiveness is doing the right thing, focusing on attaining organizational goals.
Who are Managers?
- Managers are individuals responsible for planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the activities of organizations.
Why Study Management?
- Understanding management helps individuals develop the skills necessary to effectively manage resources, work in teams, and contribute to organizational success.
Mintzberg’s Typology
- Mintzberg's typology provides a framework for understanding the different roles managers play, identifying three categories:
- Interpersonal Roles: Figurehead, Leader and Liaison
- Informational Roles: Monitor, Disseminator and Spokesperson
- Decisional Roles: Entrepreneur, Disturbance Handler, Resource Allocator and Negotiator
Different Levels of Management
- Top Management: Responsible for setting strategic goals, making major decisions, and overseeing the entire organization. These managers are often referred to as executives and include the CEO, COO, and CFO.
- Middle Management: Responsible for implementing strategies, coordinating activities, and monitoring performance of lower-level managers. They are often tasked with tactical problem-solving and ensuring plans are executed effectively.
- First-Line Management: Directly supervise employees, lead work teams, and ensure operational tasks are completed efficiently. These managers often provide immediate supervision and technical expertise.
Managerial Skills
- Technical Skills: The ability to apply specific knowledge and expertise to perform tasks. Important for first-line managers.
- Human Skills: The ability to work effectively with people, both individually and in groups. Critical at all levels of management.
- Conceptual Skills: The ability to think analytically, solve problems, and make decisions. Crucial for higher-level managers.
