1.1 IT & Your Life
- Information Technology (IT) is any technology that helps produce, manipulate, store, communicate, or disseminate information.
- IT has two main parts: Computer technology and Communications technology.
Computer Technology
- A computer is a programmable, multi-use machine designed to accept data (raw facts and figures), process it, and present it in useful formats (summaries, totals, reports).
- Its function is to improve problem-solving efficiency and boost productivity.
Communications Technology
- Also known as telecommunications technology.
- Consists of electromagnetic devices and systems for long-distance communication.
- Examples include telephone, radio, and broadcast television.
- More recently, includes communication between computers through networks (like the internet).
Online
- Using a computer (or other information device) connected to a network to access information and services from another computer or device.
- A network connects two or more computers; the internet is the largest network.
IT in Education
- IT is critical to college campuses.
- It is used in teaching, labs, and course management.
- Many college courses are either online or have a course website.
- 'Distance learning' is a key educational application of IT.
Rules for Computers in Classrooms
- Computers can be used productively or misused.
- Productive use includes following lectures, working with instructors, performing assigned internet searches, and completing class assignments.
- Misuses include text messaging, emailing friends, general internet browsing for entertainment, and working on other classes' assignments.

- Email surpassed hand-delivered mail in 1998; it is highly impactful in business.
