Sources of History
- There are three kinds of sources: primary, secondary, and tertiary.
Primary Sources
- A primary source is a testimony from someone who participated in or directly witnessed an event.
- It's a document or physical object written or created during the time that is being studied.
Five Main Categories of Primary Sources
- Written Sources are written or printed materials.
- Numerical Records include any type of numerical data in printed or handwritten form.
- Oral Statements include statements made orally by an eyewitness.
- Relics are objects whose physical or visual characteristics can provide some information.
- Images includes photographs, posters, paintings, drawing, cartoons, and maps.
Secondary Sources
- Secondary sources interpret and analyze primary sources.
- Secondary sources are usually written by individuals who did not experience the events firsthand.
Tertiary Sources
- Tertiary sources is also called a reference work.
- It gives an overview of information gathered from primary and secondary sources.
- Tertiary sources do not provide original interpretations or analysis.
