Introduction to Histology
- Histology is the study of the microscopic anatomy of cells and tissues.
- It involves the examination of tissues using microscopy.

- Histological techniques are used to preserve, process, and stain tissue samples for viewing under a microscope.
Tissue Preparation Techniques
- Fixation: Preserves tissue structure and prevents decay. Common fixatives include formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde.
- Dehydration: Removes water from the tissue, preparing it for embedding. Alcohol is a common dehydrating agent.
- Clearing: Replaces alcohol with a clearing agent, like xylene, which is miscible with paraffin.
- Embedding: The cleared tissue is embedded in a supporting medium, typically paraffin wax.
- Sectioning: The embedded tissue block is sliced into thin sections using a microtome.
- Staining: Sections are then stained to enhance contrast and visibility of different cellular components. Common stains include H&E (hematoxylin and eosin).
- Mounting: The stained sections are mounted onto slides for viewing under a microscope.

Staining Techniques & Applications
