Introduction to Computer
- A computer is a machine that can perform mathematical and logical operations
- It is electronic, automatic, and can store and recall information
- Computers can process data at high speed with accuracy
- They can store a vast amount of information and handle repetitive tasks over long periods
- Computers can communicate with operators and other machines
- A computer can only execute tasks programmed by a human
- Computers can detect, but cannot correct, wrong instructions
- They are prone to occasional breakdowns or malfunctions
History of Computers
- The Chinese abacus was developed around 5000 years ago
- The electromechanical ASCC, or Mark I, was built by Howard H. Aiken at IBM and delivered to Harvard in February 1944
- Mark I was the first fully automatic computer, requiring no human intervention
- Mark I is considered the beginning of the modern computer era
- The ABC, or Atanasoff Berry Computer, was the first digital electronic computer built between 1937 and 1942 by John Vincent Atanasoff and Clifford Berry
- ABC used punched cards for input/output, vacuum tubes for processing binary data, and rotating capacitor drums for data storage
- ABC was designed to solve large systems of simultaneous equations
- The Colossus was a special-purpose electronic computer developed by Alan Turing and Max Newman in England starting in 1943
- ENIAC, or Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator, was the first general-purpose electronic computer
- ENIAC was developed by John Mauchly and J Presper Eckert
- ENIAC weighed 30 tons, used 18,000 vacuum tubes and consumed 200 kilowatts of power
- ENIAC could be programmed by manually reconnecting cables and flipping switches
- EDVAC, or Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer, was the first stored program computer developed by John Von Neumann

Generations of Modern Computers
- First generation computers (1940s-1950s) used vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory
- First-generation machines were large, expensive to operate, consumed a lot of electricity and generated heat
Memory
- RAM is volatile: Data is lost when the computer is switched off
- ROM is non-volatile: Data is not lost when the computer is switched off

Memory Measurement
