Introduction to Computer
- A computer is an electronic machine designed for performing calculations and controlling operations expressible in logical or numerical terms.
Applications of Computers
- Computers have a wide range of applications, including education, industries, government, medicine, scientific research, and the arts.
- Millions of complex calculations can be performed quickly.
- Decisions can be reached with accuracy.
Characteristics of Computers
- Speed: Computers process data at extremely high speeds, handling millions of instructions per second, which far surpasses human capabilities. Speed is measured in MHz.
- Accuracy: Computers are very accurate, and the degree of accuracy depends on the instructions given and the type of machine.
- Diligence: Being machines, computers don't get tired or lose concentration, providing consistent performance.
Reliability
- Reliability is measured against predefined operation standards, meaning the computer should perform tasks without failure.
- The main memory is small, requiring secondary storage (like tapes or disks) to hold large amounts of information.
Versatility
- Computers can perform multiple tasks simultaneously efficiently, such as writing, playing music, or printing documents.
- This ability is possible by changing the program.
Resource Sharing
- Computers enable the sharing of resources such as printers and data. This creates extensive information and knowledge bases.
Evolution of Computers
- Early counting methods used fingers and pebbles.
- The abacus was an early counting device in Asia Minor.
- Later devices include Napier bones and slide rules.
- Blaise Pascal invented the first automatic calculator in 1642.
- Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz developed a machine for performing multiplication, division, and finding square roots.
- Charles Babbage designed calculating machines, known as Difference Engine.
- Herman Hollerith developed a device which worked for the US census bureau.
- Further advancements used electrical components to perform calculations, culminating in the modern computer.
- Mark I was the first electronic calculator with relays and electromagnetic components.
- The main elements from the 1940s to 1950s were vacuum tubes in electronic components. (ENIAC, EDVAC, and UNIVAC)
- Later, transistors and integrated circuits improved speed, size, and energy efficiency.
- The introduction of microprocessors, led to the fourth and fifth generations.
Computer Generations
- First Generation (1940-1956): Vacuum tubes for circuitry, magnetic drums for memory; Punched cards input and printouts output.
- Second Generation (1956-1963): Transistors, smaller, more portable, less heat generation.
- Third Generation (1964-Early 1970s): Integrated circuits, faster, smaller, more reliable.
- Fourth Generation (early 1970s till today): Microprocessors, very large-scale integration. Extremely fast, compact.
- Fifth Generation (Present): Artificial Intelligence, features of expert systems (that emulate human reasoning), parallel processing.
- Computer advancements generally resulted in smaller computers with more capabilities.
Computer Classification
- Four major categories: Micro, Mini, Mainframe, and Super computers (based on size and capabilities).
- Microcomputers: Personal computers (desktops and laptops).
- Minicomputers: smaller but more powerful than microcomputers.
- Mainframes: High-performance computers for large-scale data processing.
- Supercomputers: The most powerful and fastest computers designed for specialized jobs, like scientific research or modeling.
Computer Hardware
- Physical components of a computer system, including monitors, mice, keyboards, and storage devices.
- Input devices gather information.
- Output devices display or produce results from computer processing.
- Includes physical components like memory, hard drives, and processing units.
Computer Software
- Instructions enabling a computer to perform specific tasks.
- System software manages hardware components. (example: Operating Systems, Device drivers, Language Translators)
- Application software performs tasks for users. (example: word processors, spreadsheets, graphics software)
User Interface (UI)
- How a user interacts with a computer system.
- Graphical User Interface (GUI): Uses visuals (windows, icons, menus) for input.
- Command-line Interface (CLI): Text-based, requiring commands for interaction..
- Menu-driven Interface: Uses menus to guide users in completing tasks.
- Form-based Interface: Data input through forms or structures.
Windows Operating System
- Multitasking operating system with a graphical user interface.
- Key components include Desktop, Taskbar, Start Menu, My Computer, Recycle Bin.
Internet
- Global network interconnecting computers.
- Communication Services: Enable data exchange (e.g., VoIP, email).
- Information Retrieval Services: Allow searching and access to information (e.g., Web services).
- File Transfer: Enabling movement of data across networks (e.g., FTP).
- Directory Services: Providing organizational information about services and resources (e.g., DNS).
MS Word
- A word processing program included in MS Office suite.
MS PowerPoint
- A presentation software for creating slide shows.
