Introduction to Computer Systems
- A computer system integrates hardware, software, and users (“humanware”) to manage and present information effectively.
- Computer architecture refers to the design and arrangement of various computer system components.
- Key components in computer architecture include the input unit, processing unit, storage unit, and output unit.
Components of Computer System
- Data: Raw facts, such as characters, numbers, images, and sounds, that can be manipulated by the computer.
- Software: A collection of instructions or programs that direct hardware operations for specific tasks.
- People/User: Individuals who operate and interact with the computer system.
-
Hardware: The tangible physical components of a computer, categorized into four main units:
- Input Unit
- Central Processing Unit (CPU)
- Memory Unit
- Output Unit
Input Unit
- Accepts inputs from users and converts them into a format the computer can process and store.
- Acts as the interface for users to provide data and instructions.
- Common input devices include:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Scanner
- Light pen
- Joystick
- Microphone
- Barcode reader
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
- Functions as the brain of the computer, organizing and executing instructions.
- Processes data from main memory and sends results back to main memory.
- Key functions of the CPU include:
- Executing processing operations.
- Sending commands to other computer parts.
- Controlling the sequence of operations.
- Managing data or instruction storage.
Sub-components of CPU
- Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU): Executes arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and logical operations (AND, OR, NOT) as well as relational operations (identifying equalities and inequalities).
- Control Unit (CU): Coordinates the activities of the computer by directing operations of the ALU, memory, and input/output devices.
- Set of Registers: Small storage locations within the CPU used to hold temporary data and instructions.
