Study Notes
Computer Networks
- Computer networks involve the interconnection of computers.
- Computer networks act as a basis of communication in Information Technology.
- Setting up a computer network allows for sharing information and resources amongst systems and equipment in a fast and reliable fashion.
- Computer networks have a minimum of two connected computers, either via cables or Wi-Fi.
Commonly Used Computer Network Types:
- LAN: Local Area Network
- WLAN: Wireless Local Area Network
- PAN: Personal Area Network
- VPN: Virtual Private Network
- WAN: Wide Area Network
LAN (Local Area Network)
- LANs connect computers over relatively short distances.
- A LAN enables resources as well as data and files to be shared.
- Example: a LAN can connect all computers inside an office building, school, or hospital.
WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)
- WLANs are similar to LANs.
- However on a WLAN, connections between devices are made wirelessly.
PAN (Personal Area Network)
- PANs serve a single user.
- For example if a user has a mobile phone plus a computer, a PAN can share and sync content, like text messages, emails, and photos, across both the devices.
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
- A VPN refers to a secure, point-to-point connection between two network endpoints.
- VPNs set up an encrypted channel which secures a user's identity and access credentials.
- VPNs secure any data transferred, making it inaccessible to hackers.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
- WANs connect computers over wide areas.
- Wide areas include region to region or even continent to continent.
- The Internet is the largest WAN.
- The Internet connects billions of computers all across the world.
