Study Notes

Introduction to Computer

  • Technology plays an important role in all aspects of life, making it a necessity for everyone to know about computers.

Computer System

  • A computer is an advanced electronic device that takes data as input, processes it under the control of a set of instructions, produces a result, and saves it for future use.
  • A computer system consists of three main components: Hardware, Software, and User.
  • Hardware refers to physical components like screens, cables, keyboards, and printers.
  • Software refers to non-physical components, a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do and how to do it.
  • User refers to a person who uses the software on the computer to do some tasks.

Functionalities of a Computer

  • Step 1: Takes data as input.
  • Step 2: Stores the data in its memory and uses them as required.
  • Step 3: Processes the data and converts it into useful information.
  • Step 4: Generates the output.
  • Step 5: Controls all the above four steps.

Advantages of Computers

  • High Speed: Can perform calculations of a large amount of data in a few seconds, about 3-4 million simple instructions per second.
  • Accuracy: Computers are very accurate devices where the calculations are 100% error-free.
  • Storage Capability: Can store very large amounts of data than human beings, including images, videos, text, audio, etc.
  • Diligence: Can work continuously without any error and perform repeated tasks with the same speed and accuracy.
  • Versatility: Can be used to solve problems related to various fields, such as air reservation, banks, hotels, weather forecasting, etc.
  • Reliability: A computer is a reliable machine, and modern electronic components have long lives.

Application of Computers

  • Business: Used for payroll calculations, budgeting, sales analysis, financial forecasting, and managing employee databases.
  • Banking: Used for online accounting facilities, ATM machines, checking current balance, making deposits, checking interest charges, and shares.
  • Education: Helps in providing online classroom learning, simplifying record keeping, creating documents, online library, and tracking student performance.
  • Healthcare: Used in diagnostic systems, lab-diagnostic systems, and patient monitoring systems.
  • Communication: Used for email, chatting (social media), and video-conferencing.

Generation of Computers

  • First Generation (1946-1959): Vacuum tube technology, unreliable, supported machine language only, very expensive, generated a lot of heat, slow input and output devices, huge size, and non-portable.
  • Second Generation (1959-1965): Transistor-based, reliable, smaller and more compact, generated less heat, consumed less electricity, faster, and supported machine and assembly languages.
  • Third Generation (1965-1971): Integrated Circuit-based, more reliable, smaller size, generated less heat, faster, lesser maintenance, costly, and supported high-level language.
  • Fourth Generation (1971-1980): Microprocessor-based, very cheap, portable, reliable, used PCs, very small size, concept of internet was introduced, and great developments in the fields of networks.
  • Fifth Generation (1980-onwards): Ultra Large-Scale Integration-based, development of true artificial intelligence, development of natural language processing, more user-friendly interfaces with multimedia features, and availability of very powerful and compact computers at cheaper rates.
