Introduction to Communication

• Communication is the process of creating a connection between two points to exchange information.

• A communication system is a system designed to exchange information.
• The system comprises the following components:
  • Information Source
  • Input Transducer
  • Transmitter
  • Communication Channel
  • Receiver
  • Destination

Elements of a Communication System

Information Source

• The information source generates the information to be transmitted.

Input Transducer

• The input transducer converts information from its original form into a form suitable for transmission.

Transmitter

• The transmitter processes the information and sends it across the communication channel.
• The transmitter generates radio waves from an antenna for data transmission.
• Examples of transmitters include FM, AM and PM transmitters.

Communication Channel

• The communication channel is the medium through which the information travels from the transmitter to the receiver.

Receiver

• The receiver receives the transmitted information and processes it.

Destination

• The destination is the final stage of the communication system.
• The destination is used to convert the electrical message signal back into its original form.
• An example is a loudspeaker, which converts an electrical signal into an audible sound signal.
