Study Notes
Science is an interdisciplinary field of study involving many different subjects such as biology, physics, psychology, and chemistry. Chemistry specifically focuses on understanding how materials interact with each other by studying their composition, structure, properties, and reactivity. It's one branch of science amongst many others, all like pieces of a puzzle working together to create our understanding of the world we live in.
Chemistry can broadly be divided into two branches - organic chemistry which deals with carbon compounds and physical chemistry which involves quantitative analysis of chemical processes. Organic chemistry helps to understand biological systems while physical chemistry provides insights into energy conversion within cells. Both are equally important and produce new knowledge in diverse areas including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, environmental protection, and energy production.
Some common terms used in chemistry include atoms, molecules, elements, and compounds. Atoms are basic building blocks of matter; they come together in various combinations called molecules. Elements consist of only one type of atom, whereas compounds contain more than one element bonded together. In contrast, pure material consists solely of one substance.
In chemistry, reactions occur when chemicals combine to form new materials. Reactions might involve heating up materials until they explode or dissolving solids in liquids. Understanding these reactions allows us to make medicines, design modern fabrics, grow crops, adjust food coloring, clean water, develop electronic devices, manage waste streams, generate electricity, control climate change, and much more.
The basis of human life comes from living organisms which are made out of protein chains containing amino acids connected through peptide bonds. These proteins determine what your body does every day. Protein synthesis occurs in ribosomes where DNA instructions are transferred into RNA messages and turned into proteins. This process shows how important it is to understand chemistry as part of any scientific education.
