Lecture 7: Intelligent Agents as a Framework for AI: Part I
- Intelligent agent approach arose as a general framework for studying AI in the 1990s.
- Emphasis on agents operating within environments.
- Agents need to perceive and understand their environment.
- Agents act upon it to achieve goals successfully in complex environments.
- Interaction between multiple agents pursuing individual goals.
- Russell and Norvig use this framework to structure their account of AI.
Agents and Environments
- Definition: An agent is anything perceivable through sensors and acting through actuators on its environment.
- Examples:
- Human: eyes, ears, hands, legs, vocal tract
- Robot: cameras, infrared range finder, various motors
- Software: keystrokes, file contents, network packets, screen display, writing to file, sending network packets
Percepts and Percept Sequences
- Percept: an agent's current perceptual inputs.
- Percept sequence: the complete history of everything the agent has perceived.
Agent Function
- An agent's choice of action depends on its entire percept sequence up to that time.
- Agent function: A function from the set of percept sequences to the set of actions; defines what action an agent takes given a percept sequence.
- Agent program: Concrete implementation of the agent function running within a physical system.
Agent Function vs Agent Program
- Agent function is an external characterization.
- Agent program is the internal implementation.
- Agent function is an abstract mathematical description of mapping percepts to actions.
- Agent program is a concrete implementation running in a physical system.
R&N Example: Vacuum Cleaner World
- Two locations: A and B.
- Vacuum agent can perceive which square it is in and if there is dirt.
- Vacuum agent can act by moving right, moving left, sucking up dirt, or doing nothing.
- Simple agent function: If the current square is dirty, suck; otherwise, move to the other square (VCA-F1).
- VCA-F1 agent is rational if expected performance is at least as high as that of any other agent's given a performance measure.
Rational Agent Behaviour
- Good behaviour + rationality: An agent, when placed in an environment, generates a sequence of actions based on percepts received. This results in a sequence of environment states. Desirable states mean good agent performance. Performance measure evaluates sequences of environment states.
- Good Behaviour + Rationality (cont): A good performance measure must evaluate a sequence of environment states, not agent states. Agents should assess actual consequences of their actions in the environment.
- Different tasks require different performance measures for evaluating rational behaviour.
- Rational agents should select the action that maximizes performance measure given the percept sequence to date.
- Rationality is about maximizing expected performance, not necessarily actual performance.
- Agents can act irrationally with poor performance measures, or if their knowledge of the environment or their prior experience is insufficient.
Omniscience
- Agents cannot be omnipotent.
- Agents can be rational without absolute knowledge to make the best decisions.
Learning
- Agents should gather information and learn from what they perceive.
- Initial knowledge of the environment can be adapted with experience.
- Agents that lack flexibility are prone to failure without adapting to changes through learning.
- Agents can show learning when faced with problems beyond their initial knowledge.
Autonomy
- Agents need autonomy to compensate for partial or incorrect prior knowledge, and lack of omniscience.
- Agents need to adapt behaviour based on changing environments.
Aspects of Environments
- PEAS (Performance measure, Environment, Actuators, Sensors) describe the task.
- Keep in mind that agents might be robots interacting with the physical world or softbots whose environment is the internet.
- Task environments vary along multiple dimensions: fully vs. partially observable, single or multi-agent, deterministic vs. stochastic, episodic vs sequential, dynamic vs static, and known vs. unknown.
Properties of Task Environments
- Fully vs Partially Observable Environments: Fully observable environments provide the agent with a complete state view. Partially observable environments do not.
- Single vs Multi-agent Environments: Environments can involve a single agent or multiple interacting agents, affecting the agent’s decision-making process.
- Deterministic vs Stochastic Environments: Deterministic environments have predictable outcomes, while stochastic environments involve random events or elements.
- Episodic vs Sequential Environments: Episodes are independent, while sequential environments impact future decisions.
- Discrete vs Continuous Environments: Discrete environments have a finite number of states and percepts, continuous environments have infinite possible states and perceptual values.
- Dynamic vs Static Environments: Dynamic environments change while static environments do not.
- Known vs Unknown Environments: Agents’ knowledge of the environment may be known or unknown, as they perceive the environmental conditions.
