Study Notes
Integumentary System Structure
- The integumentary system includes the cutaneous membrane (skin) & accessory structures (hair, nails, glands)
- The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin and is composed of 4 layers:
- Stratum basale (deepest layer)
- Stratum spinosum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum corneum (outermost layer)
- It takes approximately 1-2 weeks for a cell to move from the stratum basale to the stratum corneum
- The dermis is beneath the epidermis and contains blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerve fibers
- The dermis is responsible for communicating with other organ systems
- Melanocytes in the epidermis produce melanin which determines skin color
- UV exposure converts cholesterol to vitamin D
Hair, Nails, and Glands
- Hair color is determined by the type of pigment present, except for red hair
- Hair is composed of keratin
- Sebaceous and sweat glands are accessory structures of the skin
- Eccrine sweat glands regulate body temperature
- Ceruminous glands are modified sweat glands located in the external auditory canal
Skin Injuries and Conditions
- The immediate response to injury is bleeding and an inflammatory response
- Scar tissue forms during the healing process
- Third-degree burns destroy the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis
- Psoriasis is caused by increased cell division in the epidermis
Skin and Body Function
- The skin helps regulate body temperature
- The primary mechanism for losing heat is evaporation
- Hypothermia is a low body temperature
- The skin is composed of the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis
- Fingerprints are unique to each person, even identical twins
- Mammary glands are modified sweat glands
