Institutional Animal Care and Use Program (IACUP)
- Consists of four active components: Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Occupational Health & Safety Program, Personnel Qualifications & Training Requirements, and Animal Facilities (Animal house)
Roles of IACUC
- Oversees animal research programs at Faculty of Science, Cairo University
- Reviews research protocols that require the use of animals
- Inspects animal facilities and evaluates animal care programs twice a year
- Reports findings and plans for corrections of deficiencies
- Serves as an information resource on animal welfare concerns
IACUC Membership
- Must have at least five members, including a veterinarian, a scientist experienced in research involving animals, and a non-scientist
- Cannot include an institutional administrator
- Members must maintain confidentiality
IACUC Meetings
- Must meet at least twice a year, but can meet more frequently
- Best practice to schedule meetings far in advance and announce dates to all research staff
Use of Alternate Members
- Helps maintain a quorum when a member cannot attend a meeting
- An odd number of voting members can ensure a quorum
