Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
- ICT encompasses both hardware (equipment) and software (programs) enabling access, retrieval, storage, organization, manipulation, and presentation of information.
- Includes all communication technologies: internet, wireless networks, cell phones, computers, software, middleware, video conferencing, social networking, and various media applications.
Evolution of ICT
- Divided into four historical periods: Pre-mechanical, Mechanical, Electromechanical, and Electronic.
Pre-mechanical Period
- Communication began using words and pictograms carved in rocks (Sumerian Pictograms, 3100 B.C.E).
- The papyrus plant was used to create the first paper.
- Compilation of paper into books leads to the development of libraries.
- Introduction of a numerical system with the Chinese Abacus.
Mechanical Period
- Growing interest in automating numerical calculations.
- Development of "PASCALINE" by Blaise Pascal, the first mass-produced adding machine, limited to addition and subtraction.
- Charles Babbage, known as the Father of Computers, designed the Analytical Engine, a general-purpose mechanical digital computer capable of executing any calculation.
Electromechanical Period
- Emergence of information handling and transfer technologies, primarily telegraph usage for long-distance transmission.
- Invention of Morse Code by Samuel Morse in 1844, encoding text as sequences of dots and dashes.
- Development of the telegraph by William Cooke and Charles Wheatstone, allowing instant communication over vast distances.
- Alexander Graham Bell invented the first working telephone, receiving a patent on March 7, 1876.
Electronic Period
- Commenced in the 1940s and continues to the present.
- Marked by the introduction of solid-state electronic devices, such as the transistor invented in 1947, revolutionizing electronic technology.
